    • United Arab Bank reports net profit for first half of 2016

      United Arab Bank reported Dh71 million net profit for the first half of 2016. The bank attributed the profit to the transformation strategy implemented in the first half of 2015. It also reported a solid performance in net interest income, cost savings and reduction in provisions for credit losses. The non-interest income saw a rise at 12% compared to the prior quarter. The non-performing loan ratio is at 4.3%, these non-core portfolios have reduced by 34% and have been managed down 52% since 30th September, 2015.

      With the new transformation strategy that was implemented in 2015 aided by reductions in provisions for credit losses and uplift in non-interest income from the streamlined operating model, the bank stood to profit AED 45 million for the first quarter in 2016. The bank is making progress in managing down non-core elements of the business and the board believes that the right management in place will deliver the best result. Provision for credit losses were AED 114 million for the first quarter of 2016. United Arab Bank adopted a proactive approach to address the asset quality deterioration. Customer loans and advances have declined by 3% to AED 15.3 billion. The bank’s Capital Adequacy Ratio improved to 15% for the first quarter of 2016.

The bank has decided to split their business into core and non-core activities, with SME banking being added to the non-core activities of the bank.

      United Arab Bank has announced a change of its senior management by appointing Julio de Quesada as the Chief Business Officer, Sheikh Mohamed Al Nuaimi as Executive Vice President of Retail, and Vijit Malik as Head of Corporate and Institutional Banking. This is being done to change UAB’s approach to service its customers and build stronger relationships with their investors.

      Julio brings to the table a deep international, commercial and corporate experience to UAB, having held several senior global positions in the finance industry over the last few decades. In his new role, he will be the overseer of the entire bank business line(s), resulting in a more focused organizational structure.

      Sheikh Mohamed has been with UAB for nearly a decade, and has supported business growth through various roles. He will now be responsible for leading the bank’s retail business in his new role.
